Catch-all addresses vs a 10-minute inbox
A catch-all is a mail server setting: any local part at your domain is accepted and dumped into one mailbox (or one pipeline). anything@yourdomain.com works, including names you never created. People use catch-alls to mint a new address per site without plus signs.
A 10-minute inbox is not a catch-all. We issue one generated name at a time. Mail to a name we did not issue is not a file in your personal archive. When the timer ends, that name is gone from our memory. Someone sending to it later is sending into a void.
These two ideas get mashed together in forum advice. Both can reduce how often you type your “real” local part. Only one of them ends.
What a catch-all is good at
If you own a domain, a catch-all lets you give shop@, pdfgate@, or that-conference-2026@ to forms. You can filter on the local part. You can prove which vendor leaked which alias. You can keep receiving for years.
You also receive the world’s typo spam. Bots guess admin@, info@, billing@. Catch-alls are noisy. They also concentrate risk: one mailbox holds every experiment you ever ran.
Plus addressing on Gmail is a weaker, cleaner cousin. You do not own the domain, but you also do not drink from a firehose of guessed names. See plus addressing vs 10minemail.
What a catch-all is bad at
It does not expire. Every alias you ever handed out still works unless you start blocking them one by one. That is the opposite of a 10-minute product.
It is a durable identity at your domain. Fraud teams may still list the domain if you also run public temp mail on it. Mixing a personal catch-all with a public disposable service is how you get your family domain listed. Do not do that.
It requires you to operate mail: DNS, MX, spam filtering, backups. That is real work. 10minemail exists so people who do not want that work can still catch a code.
What 10minemail is not pretending to be
We are not “your domain.” We will not let you pick yourname@profemail.co.uk as a standing identity. We will not forward to your Gmail for six months. We will not host a catch-all for visitors. A public catch-all is a public trash can. I do not want that on this VPS.
If you want a catch-all, buy a domain and run mail properly — or pay a provider that offers aliases as a product. That is a different market.
Confusion that causes lockouts
People hear “use a different address per site” and pick 10minemail for a shop they will reorder from. The order ships. The shop emails a delivery problem to the throwaway. The throwaway is dead. That is a catch-all / plus-alias job that was given to a timer.
The other confusion: people run a catch-all, give out randomstring@theirdomain, and call it temp mail. It is not. It is a permanent alias with a random name. Spam still arrives. Resets still work. Lists still have a path.
Use the words accurately. “Different address per site” can mean plus-alias, catch-all, paid alias, or disposable. Only disposable means gone.
How I would choose
- Own a domain and like mail admin: catch-all or per-alias mailboxes, plus aggressive filtering.
- Have Gmail/Fastmail and want tracking: plus addressing.
- Need one code and no sequel: 10minemail.
- Need to impersonate a company domain you do not own: do not. That is fraud.
If a form rejects both catch-alls (some check your domain’s MX) and disposable domains, they want a mailbox at a major consumer provider. That is a policy. Blocklists are one implementation of it.
“I’ll just forward the throwaway to Gmail”
Forwarding a public disposable address into a real mailbox recreates the list problem with extra steps. The sender still has a working path (until expiry), and then you have trained yourself to treat 10minemail as a funnel instead of an ending. We do not offer forwarding. If you want forwarding, you want aliases on a provider you pay.
Same for “I’ll keep extending until the shop emails tracking.” At that point you wanted a catch-all or a plus-alias. Use one.
Subaddressing without owning a domain
Some providers offer a dedicated alias inbox (SimpleLogin, AnonAddy, iCloud Hide My Email, Fastmail masked). Those are closer to catch-all than to 10minemail: they persist, they often let you reply, and they can be turned off per alias. They are excellent for shopping. They are overkill for a PDF gate. They are the right upgrade if you have outgrown plus signs and you still do not want a 10-minute life.
I do not compete with them. If your problem is “I shop online a lot,” use them. If your problem is “I need a code in the next five minutes and then nothing,” use this site.
Catch-all is a filing cabinet. A 10-minute inbox is a shredder with a delay. Do not store tax letters in a shredder. Do not shred the only key to a cabinet you still use. Open the inbox only when shredding is the point.
