Which email to give a signup form

The email field is a fork. Most people treat it as a slot to fill with the same address they have used since school. That habit is how inboxes die.

This is the order I use. It is not clever. It is fast enough to run in your head while the form is still on screen.

1. Walk away

If you do not want the thing behind the form, do not pay with an address. Curiosity is a bad reason to join a list. A throwaway still tells the sender that someone engaged. Sometimes the honest product is closing the tab.

Walk away especially when the next fields are a phone number, a card, or a government ID. Switching only the email is theatre.

2. Use 10minemail if all of these are true

Then open the inbox, paste, wait, finish, let it die. See 8 good uses.

If any bullet is false, do not force it. Forcing it is how lockouts happen.

3. Use a plus-alias if you might keep a light relationship

Shops you might reorder from, newsletters you actually want, communities you might post in again. you+shop@yourprovider still lands in your real mailbox, but you can filter and you can see who leaked. Plus addressing vs a 10-minute inbox.

If the site rejects plus signs, either use the bare real address (you have decided this is worth it) or skip.

4. Use your real primary mailbox if the account is part of your life

Bank, work, school, tax, health, the email you gave your family, the login you would reset from a new phone. No debate. When not to use temp mail.

If you do not have a real mailbox, create one before you create a bank login. A 10-minute inbox is not a starter identity.

5. Special cases

QA and development. Throwaway per test run. Do not use production customer data.

Travel Wi-Fi splash pages. Throwaway is usually fine if they only want email. If they want a passport, stop.

“We’ll send the PDF in 24 hours.” Not a throwaway. Plus-alias or real.

“Add a backup email.” Never a throwaway. Recovery must outlive the account.

Site blocks disposable domains. Believe them. Decide if the service is worth a real channel. Do not generate twenty names. Blocklists.

A 20-second script

Ask: “If this sender mailed me in six months, would I want that?”

If you cannot answer, that is a “real mailbox” until you can. Uncertainty means the downside is large.

What this guide is not

It is not a way to stay anonymous. IP, cookies, cards, and names are other fields. Is temp mail safe?.

It is not permission to evade bans or farm trials. Terms.

It is not a claim that 10minemail will be accepted everywhere. Acceptance is the other party’s policy.

After you choose

If you chose throwaway, stay until the job is done. Extend if the sender is slow. Do not bookmark the generated name.

If you chose plus-alias, put a filter in place the same day. An alias without a filter is just a weird-looking real address.

If you chose real, consider unchecking marketing boxes before you submit. Future you is the one who will sort that mail.

Worked examples

A font site wants email to download a zip. Throwaway. You will not email their support in six months.

A language app offers seven days free, then a card. If you might pay, real mailbox. If you are sure you will not, throwaway for the confirm, and do not save the password as if it were a long-term account.

A local shop’s Wi-Fi asks for email. Throwaway, unless the shop is one you already trust with a plus-alias.

A hospital patient portal. Real mailbox. No exceptions.

A GitHub account you will actually push to. Real mailbox. Throwaway GitHub accounts are how people lose 2FA and repos.

A one-time Slack community invite you will mute forever. Throwaway if they accept it; real or plus-alias if you might job-hunt there later.

A browser extension that demands an account “to sync.” If you will keep the extension, real mailbox. If you are trialling it for ten minutes, throwaway — and uninstall if you do not keep it.

The email field is a contract. Short contracts belong on a timer. Long contracts belong on a mailbox you will still have. Everything else is mixing them up. For the long comparison, temp mail vs a real mailbox. For the short contract, how to use 10minemail.
